JORDAN SHEARD FROM CUDWORTH SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC FIRE DEATH OF TEENAGER IN BIRTHDAY TRAGEDY
In a tragic and disturbing incident that shocked the community, Jordan Sheard, a 20-year-old resident of Darfield Road, Cudworth, was sentenced to three and a half years in prison for his role in the death of a young man during a birthday celebration. The victim, Steven Simpson, aged 18 and originally from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, succumbed to severe burns sustained during the incident last June.According to court proceedings, the events unfolded during Simpson’s 18th birthday party held at his flat in Cudworth. The gathering, which was meant to be a joyful occasion, turned into a nightmare after Simpson was subjected to relentless bullying and humiliation. Prosecutors revealed that Simpson, who had Asperger’s Syndrome and learning difficulties, was targeted because of his disability and sexuality. Witnesses testified that he was coerced into removing his shirt and encouraged to dance around, while others at the party scrawled obscenities on his body.
The court heard that the assault escalated when Sheard, egged on by others present, poured tanning oil over Simpson and then set fire to his groin area. The incident occurred in the early hours of June 23. The flames caused catastrophic burns, and Simpson was quickly rushed to Pinderfields Hospital’s specialist burns unit in Wakefield. Despite medical efforts, he tragically died two days later from his injuries.
Legal representatives from the Crown Prosecution Service, including lawyer Tim Warburton, emphasized that Simpson had recently begun attending college, where he was studying life skills and had started to make new friends. He had invited some of these friends to his birthday party, seeking to enjoy a moment of celebration and social connection. Instead, the event ended in a devastating loss that has left the community in mourning.
Sheard’s sentencing reflects the gravity of the crime, and the court’s decision underscores the serious consequences of such violent and malicious acts. The case has drawn attention to issues of bullying, disability discrimination, and the importance of community safety in Cudworth and beyond.
