A man named Jordan Matthews, aged 24, has been sentenced to a minimum of 18 years in prison for the brutal murder of his girlfriend, Xixi Bi, at their flat in Ely Road, Llandaff, Cardiff.
Following a two-week trial, Matthews was found guilty of causing the death of Ms Bi through a severe and sustained attack, which inflicted 41 injuries by dozens of impacts, including the use of a rod-like weapon.
The judge, Mrs Justice Nicola Davies, described the assault as "brutal" and noted multiple injuries such as a broken jaw, fractured ribs, and significant bruising covering a third of her body.
The court emphasized Matthews' history of physical and verbal abuse, along with Ms Bi's vulnerability because of her height and weight.
Despite Matthews' remorse being described as "less than genuine" and evidence of deception, the court acknowledged prior assessments by psychiatrists and the context of his behavior.
The judge stated: "Taking account of the aggravating and mitigating factors, the minimum term of imprisonment which you must serve is one of 18 years." The sentencing reflects the gravity of the crime, the previous abuse, and the victim's defenselessness.
The court conveyed condolences to Ms Bi's family and praised police efforts.
Matthews was also assessed as having no previous convictions, and his behavior was characterized as obsessive and paranoid from the court's findings.
