MAN THREATENS TO KILL BABY'S MOTHER AND BURY HER IN A FIELD
A man who made threats to slit the throat of his newborn's mother and claimed he would bury her in a field has been given a court sentence.Jonathan Mark Bromfield, aged 41, was also found to have damaged property in their shared residence and caused distress to his former partner.
He appeared before Truro Crown Court for sentencing after admitting to charges of assault by beating and making threats to kill.
The court was told the incident happened in June 2023 in Constantine.
Bromfield had been away for several days around the time their child was born but returned home boasting and behaving rudely.
When asked to leave, he refused and began destroying items inside the house.
The victim recorded his aggressive conduct, and Bromfield then started crying.
He proceeded to threaten her with a slashed throat and said he would bury her in a field.
During these threats, she was holding and breastfeeding their 11-day-old baby.
Bromfield also drew a kitchen knife and held it against her throat, saying, “you're not going to like what I’m going to do.” He admitted to making these threats and pleaded guilty beforehand.
The victim's statement described how his actions impacted her mental health, leaving her feeling paranoid and emotionally exhausted.
She mentioned it would take a long time for her to recover and regain her previous self.
His lawyer described Bromfield's relationship with the victim as toxic and highlighted recent personal losses, including his mother, and the new responsibilities of fatherhood.
Bromfield expressed remorse, noting he had been sober for a year, and explained that his behavior was impulsive, driven by alcohol, with no real intent to harm physically or carry out the threats.
His Honour Judge Simon Carr remarked that Bromfield must have known the victim was terrified and that doing so while she was caring for a baby showed he “completely lost control.” Bromfield was sentenced to nine months in custody, suspended for two years.
He was also subject to a restraining order, ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work, and to attend 20 days of rehabilitation for alcohol-related issues.
