Skirlaugh Child Sexual Abuser
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community, Jonathan Leak, a 45-year-old resident of Skirlaugh, has been sentenced to prison for possessing and creating indecent images of children. The investigation into Leak’s activities was initiated after an incident on Christmas Day in 2018, when he attempted to access illicit images of minors at his mother’s residence. This led authorities to his home in Cawood Drive, Skirlaugh, where a comprehensive search uncovered a staggering collection of over 133,000 indecent images stored across various electronic devices, including a laptop, mobile phone, and USB sticks.

Among these images, police discovered more than 50 photographs depicting two nine-year-old girls. Some of these images were particularly disturbing, with the children’s heads and faces cropped onto pictures of naked young children, indicating a disturbing level of manipulation and sexualization. Additionally, investigators found that Leak had taken a photograph of a wall-mounted picture of one of the girls while working in her home, further evidencing his inappropriate interest.

Prosecutor Nigel Clive detailed the extent of Leak’s obsession, revealing that the defendant had access to these images via Facebook. He admitted that during a visit to one of the children’s homes, he took a photograph of a photograph on the wall, which was of a girl who was only four years old at the time the picture was taken, although she was nine in the image he photographed.

The court heard that Leak had a particular fascination with two children, creating pseudo images by digitally imposing erect penises onto photographs or by superimposing their faces onto images of naked young girls. In total, there were 55 images involving these two girls, both approximately nine years old at the time of the investigation. Leak’s actions demonstrated a disturbing pattern of sexual interest and manipulation of images of minors.

During police interviews, Leak admitted to downloading images of children and creating these pseudo images, confirming his involvement in the creation and distribution of such material. His actions led to multiple charges, including three counts of making indecent images of children, one count of distributing such images, and possession of a prohibited image of a child.

Judge Mark Bury presided over the case and emphasized the severity of Leak’s offending. He stated that only immediate custody was appropriate given the gravity of the crimes. Leak was sentenced to two years and six months in prison. The judge highlighted that the police analysis revealed over 133,000 indecent images, with 178 images and 38 videos classified as Category A—the most severe classification. Additional images and videos fell into Categories B and C, further illustrating the extent of the material found.

Judge Bury condemned Leak’s use of sophisticated software, including anonymity tools and peer-to-peer sharing programs, which facilitated the distribution and concealment of the images. He pointed out that Leak had the capacity to disable sharing features but chose not to, indicating a deliberate intent to share these images with others. The judge also noted that Leak had accessed the homes of innocent individuals, taking photographs of children in their own environments and then sexualizing those images through cropping and manipulation.

As part of his sentence, Leak will be subject to a sexual harm prevention order and will be registered as a sex offender for the remainder of his life, reflecting the serious nature of his crimes and the potential risk to the community.
