Kirklees Child Sexual Abuser
In a disturbing case uncovered in Kirklees, a local teacher named Jonathan Craven has been found in possession of an alarming collection of indecent images and videos involving children. The investigation, which led to his arrest, revealed that Craven possessed approximately 14,000 illicit files stored on his personal computer equipment. These images included a disturbing focus on young boys, particularly those dressed in football kits, highlighting a troubling obsession.

Craven’s residence on Laburnum Road in Dewsbury was the target of police action in April of this year. The operation was part of a broader initiative known as Operation Notarise, which aims to combat the sharing and distribution of child exploitation material. During the search, authorities discovered that Craven had created a personal “cache” of indecent content, which he had made accessible to others via specialized software. This software allowed users to access files of similar interests, and Craven was identified as having contributed to this network from June 2013 onward.

Further investigations linked Craven to his employment as a mathematics teacher at Batley Business and Enterprise College. Police traced his IP address, which confirmed his involvement in the sharing of these illicit files. The material found included numerous images and videos depicting children engaged in sports activities, some of whom were as young as eight years old. The images were categorized into different levels of severity, with the most serious being Level A, comprising 872 videos and 571 images. Level B included 529 videos and 1,249 images, while Level C contained 324 videos and an alarming 10,890 images.

Prosecutor Dave Mackay described Craven’s apparent obsession, stating, “He does seem to have some addiction towards young boys in football kits, some with their tops off.” The court was told that Craven’s collection reflected a disturbing fixation on young boys in sports attire, which added to the severity of his offenses.

Craven, aged 47 and residing at Scott Close, Commercial Street, Heckmondwike, faced multiple charges. His defense attorney, Mark Brookes, explained that Craven had already been dismissed from his teaching position and that his future prospects were uncertain. The defendant, who is single, had sought help from the Lucy Faithful Foundation to understand and address his offending behavior. He had also taken steps to distance himself from his previous life by selling his home and moving to live with his parents.

In court, Craven admitted to 24 charges of making indecent images of children. The judge sentenced him to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years, with the condition that he participate in a 60-day activity program. Additionally, Craven was ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years. He was also placed under a Sexual Offences Prevention Order, which prohibits him from filming or photographing children under 16 at any sporting event in the future, reflecting the court’s concern for public safety and the protection of minors.
