JONATHAN BRENTNALL FROM NORTH PETHERTON ESCAPES JAIL DESPITE VIEWING DISTRESSING CHILD ABUSE VIDEOS
In August 2019, a disturbing case unfolded involving Jonathan Brentnall, a man residing in North Petherton, who was found to have engaged in viewing highly distressing and illegal content involving children. Despite the gravity of his actions, Brentnall was ultimately spared immediate imprisonment, receiving a suspended sentence after appearing before Taunton Crown Court.Brentnall, aged 36 and living on Blackthorn Close in North Petherton, faced charges related to the possession and creation of indecent images of children. The charges included three counts of making indecent images, categorized by varying degrees of severity. Police investigations revealed that he possessed over 200 illegal files at the time of his arrest last year, highlighting the extent of his involvement in this illicit activity.
The police were alerted to Brentnall’s activities following an international investigation conducted by authorities in the United States. The investigation uncovered that Brentnall had uploaded images of children to a group chat, prompting further scrutiny. British law enforcement officials traced the IP address associated with these uploads directly to Brentnall, leading to his arrest in October 2018. During the raid, officers seized a mobile phone, two laptops, and an external hard drive from his residence.
Analysis of the devices revealed a disturbing collection of more than 160 illegal images depicting children ranging from infants to those aged up to 10 years old. Additionally, authorities discovered 57 videos, including nearly an hour of material classified as Category A, which is considered the most extreme and disturbing form of child abuse imagery. The severity of the content was emphasized during the court proceedings, with the prosecution highlighting the distressing nature of the material.
Lucy Taylor, the prosecutor, stated that Brentnall admitted to using the dark web to access various levels of pornography involving children. She explained that he acknowledged viewing content featuring infants and children up to 10 years old, and was not surprised to learn that some images depicted even younger children. Furthermore, Brentnall was found to have used Yahoo Messenger to send illegal videos, as well as a now-defunct website called ChatStep, to share and distribute such material.
A police officer responsible for reviewing the seized content provided a stark account of the case. The detective constable remarked that, in his decade of experience, he had not encountered a case with such a high proportion of Category A images. He described the material as some of the most distressing he had ever seen, emphasizing the lasting psychological impact it had on him. The officer stated, “The content was harrowing and likely to remain with me for the rest of my life.”
During sentencing, Judge Paul Cook addressed Brentnall directly, condemning the nature of the images and videos he had viewed. The judge described the material as “truly sickening,” noting that it depicted the abuse and suffering of children, including infants up to 10 years old. Despite the severity of the crimes, the judge acknowledged Brentnall’s previous good character and his honesty during police interviews. He also recognized Brentnall’s efforts to rebuild his life and his potential for rehabilitation.
Probation officers assessed Brentnall as a low risk of reoffending and a strong candidate for rehabilitation. Taking all factors into account, Judge Cook decided that a custodial sentence was not necessary. Instead, he sentenced Brentnall to 12 years in prison, suspended for two years. The court also imposed a rehabilitation activity requirement, a sexual harm prevention order, and ordered him to pay a victim surcharge of £140. The judge concluded by stating, “It seems to me that is the best course of action for you. If you are rehabilitated, then society is better protected as a result.”
