JONATHAN BEARCROFT FROM LEIGH-ON-SEA JAILED FOR SEX OFFENCES ON SOUTHEND BUS
In May 2022, a disturbing incident unfolded involving a man from Leigh-on-Sea who targeted a young schoolgirl on a bus in Southend. The perpetrator, identified as Jonathan Bearcroft, was described by authorities as a predatory individual who engaged in a series of sexual misconducts during the course of the incident.According to court records, the incident took place on October 12 of the previous year. The victim, a school-aged girl, was subjected to inappropriate and criminal behavior by Bearcroft, who followed her onto a bus in Southend after she noticed him behaving suspiciously. Prosecutor James Onalaja detailed that Bearcroft was seen touching his trousers and rubbing his private parts in a manner that suggested sexual intent. As the girl attempted to distance herself, Bearcroft proceeded to touch her buttocks and sat close to her, all the while recording her with his phone. The girl, realizing the danger, FaceTimed a friend during the ordeal, and both of them managed to capture images of Bearcroft, which proved instrumental in his subsequent arrest.
Police officers who searched Bearcroft’s residence in Eastwood, specifically on Mansell Close, uncovered further evidence of his misconduct. Among the items found were multiple video clips depicting scenarios similar to the bus incident, as well as 20 images of upskirting, a form of indecent photography involving covertly capturing images under a person's clothing. These images and videos painted a disturbing picture of Bearcroft’s pattern of predatory behavior.
The impact of the assault on the young girl was profound. During the court proceedings, her victim impact statement was read aloud, revealing that she now second-guesses her routes when out and frequently looks over her shoulder. She expressed feeling uncomfortable and on edge, especially around males behind her, which has significantly affected her sense of safety and well-being.
Judge Andrew Hurst delivered the sentence, condemning Bearcroft’s actions as deliberate and hostile. He emphasized that the sexual touching was a calculated act that sexualized the young girl in a hostile manner. The judge also dismissed Bearcroft’s attempt to attribute his behavior to drug use, stating that such an excuse was unconvincing in this case.
As a result, Jonathan Bearcroft was sentenced to three years in prison. Additionally, he received a four-year extended license period following his release, as part of his sentence for engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child aged 13 to 15, exposure, and possession of indecent photographs of a child. The court’s decision underscores the severity of his offenses and the need to protect vulnerable individuals from such predatory conduct.
