JOHN WILLIAMS FROM PENYCAE SENTENCED AFTER SEX OFFENCE NEAR WREXHAM

In August 2013, a disturbing incident unfolded in Penycae involving a man named John Williams, who had previously maintained a clean criminal record. The case drew significant attention due to the nature of the offence and the circumstances surrounding it.

Williams, aged 58 and residing on Hall Street in Penycae, was involved in an incident where he inexplicably exposed himself and engaged in an indecent act in front of a young girl. The girl, whose age was not specified but was clearly a minor, later confided in her parents about what she had witnessed. Upon hearing her account, her parents confronted Williams directly, leading to his admission of guilt.

Following his confession, Williams made a serious and concerning attempt to take his own life, which was reported during the court proceedings. The incident in question occurred in June, when Williams reportedly opened his trousers, exposed himself, and engaged in an indecent act in the presence of the young girl. The girl’s account prompted her parents to report the matter to the police, leading to Williams’s arrest.

He was subsequently taken into custody and was admitted to hospital on July 1, where he was detained. During police interviews, Williams fully admitted to the allegations, demonstrating remorse and contrition for his actions. It was noted that the incident was brief, and he did not physically touch the girl. There were no threats or coercion involved, and he showed appropriate empathy towards the victim.

Williams’s legal case was heard at Mold Crown Court, presided over by Judge Niclas Parry. The judge described Williams’s behaviour as “quite inexplicable,” emphasizing the significant age disparity between him and the young girl. The court acknowledged that Williams had no prior convictions related to sexual offences and had pleaded guilty immediately, which was seen as a sign of remorse.

In sentencing, Judge Parry decided that a community order with supervision was appropriate to protect the public, especially young girls. Williams was ordered to participate in a community group work sexual offenders’ programme for three years. Additionally, he was prohibited from staying overnight in any residence where a child under 16 was present. To further safeguard the community, Williams was placed on the sexual offenders’ register for five years.

Prosecutor Sion ap Mihangel outlined that the incident occurred in June when Williams exposed himself and engaged in an indecent act in front of the young girl. After the incident, the girl disclosed what had happened to her parents, who confronted Williams. His admission to the police followed, and his arrest was made after he was hospitalized. The magistrates had initially remanded him in custody, citing concerns for his welfare.

Williams’s defense lawyer, Stephen Edwards, highlighted the profound impact of the incident on his client, stating, “He has lost everything, his home, his employment, and his reputation. This is a man who is entirely broken. This moment of madness has already changed his life forever. He has paid a very heavy price for his actions.” The court’s decision aimed to balance public safety with the recognition of Williams’s remorse and the circumstances of the offence.
