Jordanstown Child Sexual Abuser
In July 2002, a disturbing case unfolded involving John Toal, a 39-year-old helicopter pilot from Ulster, who was convicted of possessing a large collection of child abuse images. The investigation revealed that Toal, who resided in Jordanstown, had stored numerous heinous images and videos depicting the sexual exploitation of children on his personal computer.

The police raid on his home in Jordanstown last year uncovered hundreds of these disturbing files, which included both still photographs and video recordings. The material was deeply shocking, featuring children of both sexes, some seemingly as young as five years old, engaged in sexual acts. The court was informed that Toal’s internet activity was driven by an addiction to pornography, which he accessed during late-night hours from his bedroom.

While the court proceedings focused primarily on the child abuse images, it was also revealed that Toal possessed a significant cache of images depicting bestiality. These included explicit photographs and videos of adults engaged in sexual acts with animals such as horses, dogs, pigs, and sheep. However, due to the legal classification of bestiality as a lesser offence, these images were not considered in the sentencing process.

One officer involved in the investigation described the content as “so stomach churning that it’s too horrible to recall,” and expressed frustration over the lack of legislation at the time to effectively address such material. The officer remarked, “Cops have basically been caught napping as regards the internet and this whole thing. There’s not yet the legislation to deal with this stuff and it was simply disgusting.”

During the court hearing, Toal appeared subdued, staring at the floor as details of the seized images and videos were presented. The discovery was made after another individual, using the same computer in Toal’s rented property in Coolemoyle Park, stumbled upon the illicit files. The property was used by professionals and students, which added to the shock of the case.

Judge Anthony Hart, who reviewed some of the material before sentencing, expressed his horror at the collection, which included images of children of both sexes, some seemingly no more than five years old. Despite the severity of the content, the court clarified that charges related to bestiality would not be pursued in this case.

Instead, Toal was convicted on 15 counts related to child pornography and was sentenced to four months in prison. His address was listed as Doogary Road in Omagh, and it is anticipated that he will return to County Tyrone upon his release in September.

As part of his sentence, Toal’s computer will be destroyed along with all its contents. Additionally, he has been ordered to register as a sex offender for the next seven years. A police officer involved in the case commented on the sentencing, stating, “He should have got four YEARS,” highlighting the gravity of the crimes committed.
