JOHN TEMPLE FROM SATLEY SHOCKS COUNTY DURHAM WITH SECOND CHILD PORN CONVICTION

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the County Durham community, John Temple, a man with a complex and troubled history, has been sentenced to prison once again for possessing and distributing indecent images of children. Temple, who previously served as both a police officer and a barrister, was found guilty of serious offences involving child exploitation, highlighting a disturbing pattern of criminal behavior that has marred his once-promising career.

According to court reports, the 54-year-old, residing in Satley, was subjected to a lengthy sentencing process at Liverpool Crown Court. Judge Clement Goldstone QC, the Recorder of Liverpool, did not hold back in his remarks, describing Temple as a “sick man” despite his distinguished service in the Navy, police, and legal profession. The judge emphasized the stark contrast between Temple’s past contributions to public service and his current criminal conduct, which involved a perverted interest in child pornography, including images depicting children engaging in sexual acts with other children, adults, and even animals.

The court was told that a computer owned by Temple for just a month contained over 1,000 images of children, with approximately one-third classified as illegal. This alarming detail was used by the prosecution to illustrate the extent of Temple’s unhealthy obsession with such material. Police officers who raided his home on April 19 of that year discovered indecent images not only on his computer but also in his pockets and on his bedside table, further underscoring the severity of his offenses.

During the hearing, Ian Harris, representing the defense, highlighted that Temple had lost everything—his career, reputation, and stability—leaving behind the ruins of what once were promising professional lives. Temple pleaded guilty to 19 charges related to child pornography, some of which fell into the more serious categories, leading to a sentence of 16 months in prison. Additionally, the court imposed a lifetime Sexual Offences Prevention Order, restricting his internet access and prohibiting him from working with children. He is also already registered on the Sex Offenders Register for life.

Temple’s criminal history is extensive. In 2005, he was previously jailed for eight months after being found with over 3,700 indecent images of children, including photographs of infants as young as ten months old. His earlier offenses involved downloading and distributing such material, which he admitted in court. His online activities initially came to light during an operation targeting a paedophile ring of over 1,300 members, during which authorities seized his computer in 2004. The investigation revealed that he had distributed more than 490 images to other members of this network.

His background is equally complex. Temple served with North Yorkshire Police and later with Northumbria Police before retiring in 1992 after suffering serious head injuries during an assault by suspected car thieves in North Tyneside. After his injury, he retrained and became a barrister in Durham in 1998. However, his personal life was marred by gambling and alcohol problems, which may have contributed to his troubling online behavior.

His criminal activities, particularly the possession and distribution of child abuse images, have been a recurring issue. The 2013 case is not his first conviction; in 2005, he was sentenced to two years and eight months for similar offenses. The police investigation revealed that his collection included images of children as young as ten months old, with some images being highly classified in terms of severity. His involvement in a paedophile network was uncovered through Operation Ore, a national effort to dismantle such rings, which linked him to the pseudonym “Rudisrevenge.”

Outside court, Detective Sergeant Keith Gilfillan of Durham Police’s vulnerability unit commented on Temple’s background, stating, “With his experience as a police officer and a barrister, Temple may have thought that he knew enough not to be caught and could make himself above the law. Today’s sentence shows that he is not above the law and neither is anyone else, regardless of social standing or profession.” The case continues to serve as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by individuals with such backgrounds who commit these heinous crimes, and the importance of vigilant law enforcement in protecting vulnerable children from exploitation.
