HULL PENSIONER JAILED FOR POSSESSION OF EXTREME CHILD ABUSE IMAGES
Police discovered a collection of "disgusting" indecent images involving children after searching the computer equipment of retired accountant John Sims, who admitted to the offences.Sims, 70, of Cranbrook Avenue, Hull, confessed to five charges, including three counts of making indecent images of children and additional charges of possessing prohibited and extreme images involving animals, with the offences spanning from December 11, 2012, to October 19, 2022.
Prosecutor Connor Stuart stated that police traced an internet account linked to Sims that was used to access these illicit images, leading them to his residence.
During the search, officers seized a desktop computer, a laptop, and other electronic devices, revealing a total of 294 images.
These included two Category A images of children—considered the most serious—along with ten in Category B and 99 in Category C, plus five prohibited images of children and 178 extreme images of bestiality.
Sims later told police that he "liked to watch a lot of gory videos," including scenes of beheading, speculating that he might have seen the images while viewing such violent content.
He claimed ignorance of the images' illegality, stating he did not realize that accessing or possessing such pictures was illegal, despite having deliberately searched for them and possessing a large volume.
The court heard that Sims had no prior convictions and he pleaded guilty early in the case, taking full responsibility and expressing remorse.
Mitigating lawyer Jane Rapin explained that Sims now understands the impact of his actions on victims and is committed to seeking help.
She noted that he had not accessed any illegal images since his arrest and acknowledged that he realized the nature of the images was wrong, understanding that innocent people, including children, were victims.
His sentence included 50 hours of unpaid work, 30 days of rehabilitative programs, and a 10-year sexual harm prevention order.
He must also register as a sex offender for five years and pay £150 in costs.
Judge Alexander Menary emphasized the importance of rehabilitation to prevent future offending.
