DEMENTIA-STRICKEN MAN WHO MURDERED WIFE TO STAY IN HOSPITAL
John Pryde, aged 77 and suffering from advanced dementia, was accused of killing his wife Catherine at their residence in Fishcross, Clackmannanshire, during March of the previous year. The assault was described as unusually violent and considered to be completely uncharacteristic of Pryde’s usual behavior.
Due to his mental condition, Pryde was deemed unfit to stand trial and will remain hospitalized at Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert.
Court reports indicate that Mrs.
Pryde was discovered in her kitchen with blood on her body, having suffered multiple injuries including blunt force trauma to her head, chest, and neck.
Her injuries consisted of cuts, bruises, 16 fractured ribs, and a fractured voice box.
The judge observed that she had sustained a brain injury similar to those seen in severe accidents such as car crashes.
She passed away one week before celebrating her 50th wedding anniversary with Pryde.
Pryde, who also goes by the name Ian, had been diagnosed with dementia in 2021.
During police interviews, he was unable to comprehend the situation or recall his wife’s death.
Psychiatrist Dr.
Prathima Apurva testified that Pryde was incapable of understanding the nature and consequences of his actions, concluding that her opinion was that he lacked criminal responsibility because of his severe mental incapacity.
