JOHN O'SHEA CAUGHT IN POLICE TRAP IN SHENLEY AND LEICESTER
In a disturbing case that highlights the dangers of online predation, John O’Shea, a 51-year-old man from Pippin Close in Shenley near Watford, was apprehended after traveling to Leicester with the intent to commit serious sexual offenses against children.The incident unfolded in January 2018, when O’Shea believed he was communicating with the mother of two young children through social media, but in reality, he was speaking with an undercover police officer.
According to court proceedings at St Albans Crown Court, O’Shea had arranged to meet what he thought were an 11-year-old girl and her eight-year-old brother.
His plan was to sexually assault the children, a fact he explicitly detailed in a series of graphic and explicit text messages exchanged over more than a week.
The court was told that O’Shea traveled approximately 85 miles from Hertfordshire to Leicester, arriving at a fast food restaurant located on Leicester’s Meridian retail park on November 16.
His arrest was swift and decisive.
Police detained him at the scene after he had made the journey, and during a search of his belongings, officers discovered more than 80 indecent images and videos of children on his phone.
Of these, ten were classified at the most severe level of indecency, indicating the most serious category of child exploitation material.
O’Shea faced multiple charges, including two counts of arranging to meet a child under 13 for the purpose of engaging in a child sex offense, and three counts related to the possession and downloading of indecent images of children.
Prosecutor Satya Chotalia emphasized the gravity of his intentions, stating, “Within the messages he said he wanted to have sexual activity with both children.
He said he knew it was wrong and illegal.” During the trial, the jury heard how O’Shea had explicitly outlined his intentions in texts sent over a period of more than a week, revealing a disturbing premeditation.
His defense attorney, Andel Singh, acknowledged that O’Shea had recently lost his job and his long-term partner of 30 years, which may have contributed to his actions.
As part of his sentencing, O’Shea was ordered to comply with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and was required to register as a sex offender indefinitely.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by online predators and the importance of vigilant law enforcement efforts to protect vulnerable children from exploitation.
