JOHN O’DONNELL FROM ARDFOYLE SENTENCED FOR GROSS INDECENCY INVOLVING 12-YEAR-OLD GIRL

In October 2009, a disturbing case involving a man from Ardfoyle came to light, revealing serious allegations of sexual misconduct against a young girl. John O’Donnell, aged 44, was found guilty of engaging in gross indecency with a 12-year-old girl he was entrusted to care for as a babysitter. The court proceedings detailed a series of troubling incidents that took place during his time watching over the children, which ultimately led to his conviction and sentencing.

O’Donnell was sentenced to four months in prison and was ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of seven years. The magistrates court in the city heard that O’Donnell’s behavior included speaking and acting in a sexual manner towards the young girl while they were alone in the house. The court was informed that the misconduct occurred while he was watching an adult television channel, which was part of the evidence presented during the trial.

The first incident occurred when O’Donnell was caring for three children—two girls and a boy. He instructed the girls to go upstairs and return only after their brother was asleep. When they came back downstairs, O’Donnell turned on an adult channel on the television and began watching a pornographic film. The two girls sat on a sofa opposite him while he lay on the same sofa. After a brief period, he asked the girls to leave the room so he could “fix his trousers.”

When the girls returned, the younger girl noticed that O’Donnell was “playing with himself.” The court was told that he asked the older girl if she was okay, to which she responded yes, out of fear that he might do something harmful if she said no. O’Donnell then engaged in a lewd act in front of the girls for approximately 15 minutes before the younger child went to bed. Later, he offered the 12-year-old girl a glass of wine, which she refused, citing her desire to uphold her “Confirmation” pledge.

On a subsequent occasion, O’Donnell asked the girl if she wanted to watch a movie with him. She observed his hand moving up and down beneath a blanket, which was a clear indication of inappropriate behavior. The girl eventually confided in her mother about what had happened, leading to police and social services being notified and the case being formally investigated.
