John Llewellyn Jones, born around 1954 and residing on Bishopston Road in Ely, Cardiff CF5, was convicted in 2019 for killing a seagull during a trip to Weston-super-Mare in July 2018. The incident involved Jones smashing the gull against a wall after it attempted to steal his chips. Although he denied breaching the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, he was found guilty of the offence.
The RSPCA commented on the case, stating, "He cared more for his chips than what he did to the gull."
RSPCA inspector Simon Evans commented on the incident, saying, "This was an unthinkable and despicable way to treat an animal. The gull was smashed against a wall by the man… and bystanders, including children, had to look on as the man killed the gull."
The RSPCA advises the public not to feed gulls and to ensure rubbish is disposed of properly, especially in seaside areas where these birds tend to gather.
As for the sentence, Jones received a 12-week curfew and was ordered to pay a total of £835 in costs and charges.
This case was reported by BBC News.
