NOTTINGHAM MAN JAILED FOR LIFE FOR STABBING EX TO DEATH
A man named John Jessop, aged 26, was convicted for the murder of 47-year-old Clare Ablewhite at her home located in Colston Bassett. On the night of 25 February 2022, Jessop cycled 17 miles from Newark to reach her house, where he launched a violent attack described by police as 'brutal and relentless.' The assault left Ms Ablewhite with catastrophic injuries; the judge noted that Jessop 'bludgeoned her repeatedly,' initially unarmed, and then used one of her knives to stab her and cut her throat.
The injuries to her head and chest appeared impulsive and personal, suggesting anger from Jessop.
He was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 17 years and 8 months before parole eligibility.
It was argued in mitigation that Jessop did not plan the murder but acted in a fit of rage, a point the court accepted, leading to a reduction from an initial 20-year sentence.
Authorities stated that Jessop lacked remorse and took measures to conceal his movements, including leaving his phone at home to avoid detection.
Evidence such as CCTV surveillance, dashcam footage, and her water-damaged phone played a key role in identifying and arresting him.
Jessop pleaded guilty to the charge of murder.
The case was characterized by its relentless violence and not only had a profound emotional impact on Ms Ablewhite's family but also affected the local community deeply.
