JOHN HICKS SENTENCED IN CHAFFORD HUNDRED FOR CHILD ABUSE CASES

In April 2012, a distressing case unfolded at Southend Crown Court involving the conviction of John Hicks, a 34-year-old man from Maunder Close, Chafford Hundred, who was found guilty of heinous crimes against two young children. Hicks faced charges related to the sexual abuse of a boy and a girl, both under the age of 13, and was subsequently sentenced to three years in prison.

During the court proceedings, Hicks was convicted on seven counts of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and two counts of sexual assault on a child. Despite his convictions, he was acquitted of two other charges, which included causing a child to watch a sexual act and possession of indecent photographs of a child. Following the sentencing, the mother of the young boy expressed her profound disappointment with the length of Hicks's prison term. She stated, “It’s not long enough – my son had to go through being sexually abused for four years.” Her words reflected the deep pain and frustration felt by many parents whose children have suffered such traumatic experiences.

Meanwhile, the father of the female victim conveyed a sense of relief that their children’s allegations had finally been believed after nearly two years of doubt and accusations of dishonesty. He remarked, “The kids wake up crying because they were told they have been liars for nearly two years. It’s not acceptable – he’s a heinous individual.” His comments underscored the emotional toll that the ordeal had taken on the victims and their families.

Hicks had consistently denied any involvement in the abuse. However, the court’s verdict confirmed his guilt, and he was ordered to be subject to a Sexual Offences Prevention Order, which will prohibit him from working with children in the future. Additionally, he will remain on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions.

In his defense, Barbara Lockyear, representing Hicks, stated that her client maintained his innocence and that his family continued to support him. The court was also informed that Hicks had no prior convictions for sexual offences, although he did have a previous conviction for perverting the course of justice, which added context to his criminal history.
