OFFENDER JOHN HALL SENTENCED FOR STALKING CAMPAIGN IN LAKE DISTRICT
John Hall, the offender in this case, was involved in a serious stalking campaign against Michelle, whom he had previously had a relationship with. The relationship began in 2021 when they met at work; they enjoyed walks and meals together.
Michelle was initially unaware that Hall was married, and she ended the affair after learning about his marriage.
Despite ending the relationship, Hall’s obsessive behaviour escalated into a relentless stalking campaign.
He bombarded her with texts and phone calls, threw stones at her window, and followed her during outings, including a trip up Helvellyn mountain in September 2024.
Michelle recounted that she felt terrified, with her legs 'like jelly' and unable to breathe when she saw him emerging from the fog.
Hall’s harassment extended to phone calls from withheld numbers, messages on social media, and following her for hours.
Michelle was forced to leave her flat and avoid her usual routes to escape him.
She eventually managed to contact police, which led to his arrest.
Hall was remanded in custody for four weeks and pleaded guilty to stalking.
The court sentenced him to five and a half months in prison, but he was released on licence after two days due to time served on remand.
He subsequently breached the conditions of his licence and was sent back to prison to serve the remainder of his sentence.
Throughout the ordeal, Michelle felt isolated and fearful for her safety, eventually seeking refuge in a women’s shelter.
She shared her experience to highlight the importance of stronger protections for stalking victims and called for action to prevent such behaviour.
Hall was ultimately detained again when he appeared at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court in July 2025, where he pleaded guilty to stalking and was sentenced to further imprisonment.
Michelle expressed her desire for peace and emphasized that more needs to be done to prevent perpetrators from harassing victims like her.
Hall had also sent Michelle a photograph of his electronic monitoring tag after he ripped it off, showing his disregard for court orders.
His repeated breaches led to further jail time.
The case drew attention to the need for improved legislation and enforcement against stalking and harassment, with officials promising review and strengthening of current laws to better protect victims.
