PARTNER JOHN GARNER JAILED FOR HAMMER MURDER
A man who murdered his partner in a brutal hammer attack has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 22 years.John Garner admitted to killing Teresa Garner, 46, in their home at Pen-y-ffordd, Flintshire, on 24 October.
The court heard that Teresa suffered 16 head wounds during the assault by 51-year-old Garner, who had a history of violence towards partners, including previous altercations which led to him being jailed for assault.
Garner claimed he was heavily intoxicated for days before the murder and only realized what he had done when his solicitor visited him in custody.
He denied having the intention to attack his partner with the hammer, suggesting he believed it was in the house for a home repair project.
The judge described the attack as 'savage and quite merciless' against a 'defenseless woman' and stated that 'there is nothing I can say and no sentence I can pass that will ever adequately reflect their loss or their mother's life.' Teresa's children expressed their grief, with her son Rhys, aged 11, stating, 'When we all left for school and college that day we had no idea that we wouldn't see her alive again,' and adding, 'John Garner has taken our mum from us in a horrible way and we hate him for that.' The court also highlighted Garner's violent past towards partners, and the impact on the children, who have had to leave their home and live apart from each other.
The case was widely reported, emphasizing the brutality of the murder and the tragic consequences for the family.
