Allenton Sexual Abuser
In August 2018, a disturbing incident unfolded in the streets of Derby involving John Birks, a 58-year-old man from Allenton. Birks was found guilty of publicly exposing himself in a highly inappropriate and distressing manner, targeting two young girls who were walking in the area. The incident took place on the evening of June 28, around 9pm, on Tennyson Street, a well-known thoroughfare in Allenton.

According to reports presented in court, a motorist passing through Tennyson Street witnessed a troubling scene. The driver observed two young girls running down the street, visibly upset and frightened by what they had just experienced. As the motorist slowed down and pulled alongside Birks, who was standing on the pavement, he saw Birks with his trousers and underwear around his ankles, engaged in a sexual act. The motorist recounted that Birks initially pulled his trousers back up when he noticed the car, but then lowered them again and continued his inappropriate behavior.

The driver, alarmed by the situation, stopped his vehicle and contacted the police. During the police investigation, officers learned that Birks, who resides on Radbourne Street off Kingsway, had been seen with his trousers and underwear down, holding what appeared to be a magazine. Despite the police arriving shortly after the call, Birks had already pulled his clothing back up but then lowered them again, resuming his act.

Birks was promptly arrested at the scene on suspicion of indecent exposure. Although the two young girls involved could not be located afterward, authorities acknowledged that they would have been terrified by what they witnessed. During his police interview, Birks expressed confusion and remorse, stating he did not understand why he behaved as he did. He claimed he was unaware of any people around and did not see the girls at the time. Birks also admitted to feeling disgusted with himself but could not provide a clear explanation for his actions.

He appeared before Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded guilty to the charge of indecent exposure. Additionally, Birks admitted to failing to surrender to custody after missing his initial sentencing hearing scheduled for July 23. The magistrates sentenced him to 20 weeks in prison for the two offences. Furthermore, Birks was ordered to register as a sex offender, a status he will maintain for the next seven years, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his conduct.

The case highlights the serious nature of public indecency and the importance of swift law enforcement response to protect vulnerable members of the community, especially young children. The incident in Allenton remains a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and community safety measures to prevent such disturbing acts from recurring.
