JOHN BAKER FROM REDFIELD SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE AND EVIL IMAGES IN BRISTOL COURT

In a case that has shocked the community of Redfield and the wider Bristol area, John Baker, a 63-year-old former taxi driver, was sentenced to four and a half years in prison for a series of heinous crimes involving the abuse of a young girl and the possession of extremely disturbing images of child exploitation.

The court heard that Baker had committed multiple sexual offences against a six-year-old girl, including one count of sexual assault and three counts of indecency. Additionally, he showed her indecent images of children and possessed a large collection of illegal material. The police investigation uncovered a staggering 2,823 images and 251 video clips on Baker’s computer, with between 700 and 800 classified as the most extreme, depicting children being raped, subjected to violence, or exploited alongside animals.

Prosecutor Giles Nelson detailed the extent of Baker’s abuse during the proceedings at Bristol Crown Court. He explained that Baker had engaged in multiple acts of sexual misconduct with the young girl, including touching her private parts and encouraging her to perform sexual acts on him. Nelson emphasized that Baker’s actions appeared to be targeted, with the girl feeling scared and confused, unable to fully understand the nature of what was happening to her. The court was told that Baker’s behaviour was compounded by his display of disturbing images of naked children, which he attempted to justify by claiming the computer was second-hand when questioned about the folder containing the illicit images.

When police seized Baker’s computer, they discovered a total of 3,074 images depicting child abuse, nine of which also involved animals such as dogs. The court was informed that during the period of abuse, the young victim struggled with sleep and emotional distress. It was only after years of silence that she confided in a friend, which eventually led her mother to report the matter to authorities last summer. During her police interview, the girl expressed her distress and said, “I do not want him to do this to anyone else,” revealing her desire to prevent further harm.

In mitigation, Baker’s lawyer, Edward Burgess, requested leniency, highlighting that Baker had pleaded guilty, thereby sparing his victim the ordeal of reliving her trauma in court. Despite this, Judge David Ticehurst condemned Baker’s actions, describing his interest in “evil” images and his perverted fascination with young girls. The judge emphasized the profound and lasting damage inflicted on the victims, warning that such material fuels a market that perpetuates this cycle of abuse.

As Baker was led away to the cells, a member of the public gallery shouted, “Not enough – it’s not enough!” in protest of the sentence. The court also imposed a Sexual Offences Prevention Order upon his release, mandated that he sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for life, and banned him from working with children. Police officials declined to release an image of Baker following his sentencing, but the case has left a lasting impact on the community of Redfield and beyond, highlighting the ongoing fight against child exploitation and abuse.
