HORRIFIC MURDER IN STROUD: MAN JAILED FOR 24 YEARS FOR KILLING VULNERABLE WOMAN
Joe Rankin, aged 34, was found guilty of the savage killing of Emma Potter, a woman suffering from cerebral palsy, at her apartment in Stroud on 20 September of the previous year.
Her remains were only uncovered on 4 November when police responded to concerns about her well-being.
Rankin confessed to a friend six days after officers first entered her residence.
During the trial, it was revealed that he had stabbed Emma Potter multiple times in various places, including her chest, stomach, arm, leg, and neck.
It was also disclosed that Rankin told a psychiatrist he traveled to her home intending to kill her and that he admitted to having sex with her body after her death.
Emma Potter's family described her as a beloved daughter, and her mother expressed deep sorrow, questioning how Rankin could endure the guilt of his actions.
Judge Peter Blair KC handed down a life sentence with a minimum term of 24 years, condemning the act as a gross insult and desecration of the victim’s remains.
The court noted Emma Potter’s mental health difficulties made her more vulnerable, and her family was concerned she might have been exploited.
The judgment underscored the intense grief and helplessness felt by her loved ones, condemning Rankin’s conduct firmly.
