JOE ORCHARD FROM BUGLE IN CORNWALL CONVICTED FOR CRUELTY TO DOGS

Joe Orchard, a resident of Apondarose Minorca Lane in the village of Bugle, located near St Austell in Cornwall, was found guilty in 2020 of serious animal cruelty offenses involving three dogs. Orchard, born on June 28, 1980, comes from a well-known traveller family based in Cornwall, a background that has often been associated with various community issues. His conviction stemmed from neglect and mistreatment of two Labradors named Roxy and Lady, as well as a black and white terrier called Candis.

Orchard faced charges related to failing to provide a proper and suitable environment for these animals, which is a fundamental requirement for responsible pet ownership. The incidents in question occurred primarily between December 1 and December 17, 2019. During this period, Orchard neglected to address the deteriorating health of Candis, who was suffering from poor body condition and significant weight loss. Despite evident signs of distress, Orchard did not investigate or take appropriate action to improve her condition.

Specifically, on December 16, 2019, Orchard's neglect was highlighted when he failed to meet the basic needs of the dogs, especially Candis, who was found to be in a state of hypothermia due to inadequate shelter and care. This neglect caused her unnecessary suffering, which was a key factor in the case.

The RSPCA intervened and removed all three dogs from Orchard’s care, citing the poor conditions and neglect. As part of his sentencing, Orchard was handed a fine totaling £580, which covered fines, costs, and charges related to the case. Additionally, he was prohibited from owning or keeping any dogs for a period of two years, a ban that officially expired in July 2022.

This case underscores the importance of animal welfare laws and the consequences faced by those who neglect their responsibilities as pet owners. Orchard’s actions and subsequent conviction serve as a reminder of the need for vigilance and enforcement to protect vulnerable animals from suffering.
