ABUSIVE BOYFRIEND JAILED FOR KILLING PARTNER’S PUPPIES IN FRONT OF HER
Jimmy Smith, 34, terrorised his partner in a decade-long campaign of domestic abuse, culminating in him attacking her cocker spaniels, Sky and Angel, on 7 August last year.
One puppy died at the house, while the other was later euthanized by a vet.
Smith told his partner 'I’m going to scar your face' hours before the attack.
He then picked up an axe, swung it as if to throw it, and hurled the puppies by their leads, slamming their heads into the concrete and dragging them while tied at the collar.
Smith was jailed for seven years and five months at Canterbury Crown Court and received a 10-year restraining order against his partner, who has not been named.
The court described how Smith repeatedly hit the puppies against the concrete floor, with the victim describing her devastation and fear after witnessing the cruelty.
He pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to animals, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and controlling and coercive behaviour between August 2019 and August 2022.
An RSPCA spokesperson commented on the case, highlighting how pets can be used as a means of control in domestic violence.
Time already served on remand will be deducted from his sentence.
