FELLING MAN JASON SMITH GETS COMMUNITY ORDER FOR HARASSMENT AFTER SHOWING UP AT EX'S HOUSE
A man named Jason Smith was involved in a harassment incident following his arrest and initial release on bail.Smith had been previously arrested and bailed related to matters against his ex-partner.
After being released, he went to her house around 11:30 pm on April 2 and demanded to be let in by banging on doors and windows, shouting "Let me in," and showing intimidating behaviour.
Smith then began a campaign of harassment, calling her repeatedly, sending numerous messages—some abusive and some asking to meet—and making repeated calls from unknown numbers, which continued for about a week.
The court heard that Smith was the subject of a total of 30 offences on his record, with his last court appearance in March 2023.
Smith's defence attorney, Paul Coulson, explained that part of his behaviour stemmed from struggles with the breakup and his close relationship with his grandfather, who had recently passed away, leading to drinking and emotional distress.
Smith, of Auburn Terrace in Felling, was ultimately sentenced to an 18-month community order, including 200 hours of unpaid work, and was banned from contacting his ex for 18 months after pleading guilty to harassment at Newcastle Magistrates' Court.
During the proceedings, it was revealed that he turned up at the victim's address late at night, and after being asked to leave when attempting to gain entry, he ran off when her friends arrived.
The court detailed that his actions included threatening and intimidating behaviour aimed at the victim, driven by personal issues and emotional turmoil.
