MAN JAILED FOR MANSLAUGHTER AFTER KILLING GIRLFRIEND BY SUFFOCATION
Michelle Creed, aged 34, died shortly after her boyfriend, Jason McKay, aged 36, placed his hands around her neck during a heated argument at her residence in West Kensington, London.McKay kept her neck restrained for approximately five to ten seconds, which led to her sudden collapse and subsequent death.
While there were no visible injuries, her death was caused by an uncommon physiological response called vagal inhibition, which involves suppressing a nerve pathway between the brain and the heart, ultimately causing a cardiac arrest.
The court was informed that McKay, who was unemployed and lacked a fixed address, pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
He was sentenced to a term of five years and four months in prison.
Following the incident, McKay panicked, fled the scene, and her body remained undiscovered for a full week until he turned himself in while in Poland.
Judge Charles Wide stated that the death resulted from an unusual and unseen cause and noted that McKay believed she had stopped resisting, which influenced his decision to release pressure.
