STALKER BOMBARDED WOMAN WITH HUNDREDS OF PHONE CALLS AND THREATENED TO 'BEAT HER BLACK AND BLUE'
A woman was left profoundly distressed and feeling 'absolutely terrified' after being harassed by a stalker who made 222 telephone calls to her and attacked her car with a chisel while she was sitting inside. The individual behind this harassment was Jason Hill, aged 29, who hails from Hull but does not have a permanent address and was recently held in custody on remand.
Hill admitted to charges of stalking that took place at Dodswell Grove, Hull, during the period from July 1 to November 20 of the previous year.
He initially denied the charges but later entered a guilty plea.
Prosecutor Stephen Welch explained that the victim was a neighbor to a man known to Hill, but their connection was limited to this acquaintance.
Hill would attempt to access the man’s residence by knocking on the woman’s door, often in the early hours.
He succeeded in obtaining her phone number and repeatedly called her despite her efforts to block his number.
During the months from July to November, Hill made 222 calls to her.
On November 14, he left a threatening voice message, promising to 'beat her black and blue,' and also made threats against a family member.
On August 6, he broke a window at her house and punctured her car's tyre.
On November 19, Hill damaged her car again by attacking it with a chisel while she was inside, causing her to panic and drive away.
The woman later said: "The whole incident has had a significant impact on my life.
I still jump out of my skin when I hear noises outside, thinking it's him." She was worried that Hill might come back and do it again.
When she was out of the house, she was always on edge.
"I can't rest because of all this worrying," she said.
"I am suffering from anxiety and depression because of all this.
It has taken over my life.
This has overtaken my life with worry and anxiety.
"This wasn't just a case of an empty threat.
He actually did it and might do it again." During police interview, Hill made virtually no comment.
He had convictions for five previous offences, including making threats to kill in 2016 and breaching a restraining order, involving his father.
Connor Stuart, mitigating, said that Hill pleaded guilty after early denials.
He acted impulsively after suffering problems but this was not an excuse for his behaviour.
He had been in custody for about five months and his most recent offence was in 2023.
Judge John Thackray KC told Hill: "Quite why you targeted your victim in this case, probably we will never know.
There is no good reason for behaving like that.
"You made her life a misery for many months.
She must have been absolutely terrified.
You should be thoroughly ashamed of your behaviour towards your victim, who deserved nothing of the sort.
"You phoned her 222 times, you attacked her car with a chisel while she was sitting in it.
She says all of that has overtaken her life.
"They weren't empty threats.
You have had a significant impact on her life.
She might never fully recover from the effects of your offending.
It was over a long period.
"She has had to make substantial changes to her lifestyle.
I am not satisfied that your risk can be managed in the community.
"I am not satisfied that you can be rehabilitated in the community.
Only appropriate punishment can be achieved for this type of offending by way of an immediate custodial sentence." Hill was jailed for two years and he was given an indefinite restraining order.
