ASHTON-UNDER-LYNE MAN SENTENCED TO 3 YEARS FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND ASSAULT
Jason Dyer, a 37-year-old resident of Patterdale Avenue in Ashton-Under-Lyne, has been convicted of several serious domestic abuse offenses involving violence and coercion. He pleaded guilty to charges including controlling behavior, assault, and intentional suffocation.
Dyer’s abusive conduct involved actions such as suffocating his partner, biting her, pointing a fake gun at her, and violently attacking her during episodes driven by rage.
Court proceedings showed that alcohol played a significant role in provoking Dyer’s violent outbursts.
Prosecutor Helen Longworth details how Dyer’s conduct caused his partner to feel scared and vulnerable, recounting incidents where he became aggressive, once locking her inside their home, forcing her to escape via a window.
It was also disclosed that Dyer has a criminal background comprising 24 convictions over 41 offenses, with prior charges in 2015 for battery involving an attempt to suffocate a former partner.
Witness statements described repeated assaults, including knocking the victim’s possessions from her hands, grabbing her hair, pulling her back into their home, and pointing a plastic gun at her, along with severe damage to her clothing and hair.
Dyer’s legal defense claimed that he behaved differently when sober, describing him as a respectful and friendly person who becomes paranoid under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
However, the judge described his domestic violence record as ‘appalling’ and sentenced him to three years in prison for three counts of coercive behavior, assault, and intentional suffocation, with an accompanying five-year restraining order.
Detective Constable Leanne Heath emphasized the enduring trauma caused to the victim and reaffirmed law enforcement’s firm stance against domestic abuse, encouraging victims to report such offenses and seek help.
