2010: OLD HILL MAN JAILED FOR ATTACK ON STEPFATHER
A 23-year-old man from Old Hill has been sentenced to five years in prison after he viciously assaulted his stepfather, causing a fractured cheekbone.The assault happened following a dispute that reportedly began without any clear cause.
The offender, Bennett, had been drinking with Wayne Pountney, his stepfather, while walking along Upper High Street in Cradley Heath.
Eyewitnesses described how Bennett headbutted Mr.
Pountney, which prompted a violent response from Bennett, including punching him to the ground and delivering multiple kicks and strikes to his head and body.
Witnesses estimated Bennett threw between 10 to 15 punches and kicks.
The judge, Michael Dudley, characterized the attack as 'pretty savage' and emphasized the danger of kicking someone in the head, warning that such actions could potentially lead to murder charges—Bennett was fortunate not to face such.
He pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent and claimed he was initially assaulted.
The judge highlighted the repeated nature of the kicks and noted that only luck prevented more severe injuries.
The defense argued the incident originated 'out of nothing,' and that Bennett's reaction was 'clearly over the top.' Although Bennett has an extensive criminal history, it does not include serious violence.
Currently, he has no fixed address.
