FATHER JAILED FOR SEXUALLY ABUSING YOUNG DAUGHTER AND FORCING HER TO WATCH PORNOGRAPHY
A man who sexually abused his young daughter and forced her to watch pornography has been jailed for 12 years.James O'Reilly (63) was convicted by a Central Criminal Court jury of oral rape, five counts of sexual assault and three counts of sexual exploitation at the family home in Waterford on dates from 2010 to 2014.
The court heard that O'Reilly's daughter was between six and ten years old when the abuse occurred, which included oral rape and sexual assault involving inappropriate touching.
She was also sexually exploited by being forced to watch pornography and to watch her father touch himself.
The victim described how her father would slap and hit her when she did not comply, telling her it was her fault because she made him do it.
The case involved multiple trials, ultimately resulting in a conviction on all nine charges.
The judge described the offences as an egregious breach of trust, taking place over a significant period, accompanied by violence and threats, and happening in the family home.
The judge also noted that O'Reilly showed no remorse or empathy, and he had no previous sexual convictions.
She sentenced him to 13 years, with the final year suspended for 12 months on strict conditions.
Outside court, the victim stated her hope that others would find strength and justice, expressing that 'when one door closes, another one will always open,' emphasizing that although it was hard, it would get easier.
The court was told that the abuse caused devastating effects on her life, including feelings of unsafety and concern for her family’s safety.
The defence highlighted that O'Reilly was assessed as low risk of reoffending and had health issues, asking for leniency.
Authorities confirmed the abuse occurred between ages six and ten, including oral rape, sexual assault, and exploitation, with the victim recounting how her father would slap her and blame her for his actions.
The case had multiple legal proceedings before the conviction, and the victim expressed gratitude for support she received.
