FORMER CORK PRIEST JAILED IN LONDON FOR HISTORIC CHILD ABUSE
The Diocese of Cork and Ross has issued a statement calling on anyone with concerns regarding former Cork priest James Murphy, who is currently serving time in London for historical child abuse offenses. Murphy, who is 77 years old and resides at The Alders in Mallow, was given a 31-month prison sentence after admitting to seven counts of indecent assault involving four boys aged between five and 11 years old. The abuse took place from 1975 to 1988. He had previously been convicted in 1977 of 11 counts of indecent assault against five boys. Murphy worked in parishes in England until 1992, after which he returned to Ireland and served in Cork city and Glounthaune. At that time, there was no prior indication or report of abuse in the London parishes where he served. In 2000, Murphy pleaded guilty to charges related to abuse committed in London, resulting in the immediate loss of his license to serve as a priest, and he has not held a religious position since. The diocese explained that during Sunday Masses, local bishops and priests addressed the issues concerning Murphy and made it clear they support anyone who might have concerns. They also emphasized that the diocese has not had any contact with Murphy since his imprisonment and has not received any reports of misconduct during his time in Cork. They encouraged those with concerns or information to contact the Gardaí, Tusla, or the Diocesan Safeguarding Director.
