In a case that has shocked the local community, 89-year-old James Kiers from Larbert was taken into custody and sentenced to a two-year prison term yesterday. Kiers, who was wheelchair-bound, was found guilty of repeatedly abusing a young girl he was entrusted to care for, revealing a disturbing pattern of misconduct that spanned over three years.

The victim, an 11-year-old girl at the time, suffered at the hands of Kiers, a former miner, after her mother had passed away. Her father relied on Kiers and his wife to look after her during working hours, trusting them to provide a safe environment. However, during times when his wife was away, Kiers engaged in a series of indecent acts against the girl, which he carried out over a prolonged period.

Throughout the abuse, Kiers threatened the young girl with the prospect of being placed in a home if she ever disclosed what was happening. This intimidation prevented her from speaking out for many years, and it was only after she reached adulthood that she felt able to report the abuse to authorities.

The case was heard at the High Court in Edinburgh, where Lady Cosgrove delivered her verdict. She condemned Kiers' conduct as
