JAMES JOYCE FROM CLYDEBANK SENTENCED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY IN SCOTLAND

In July 2014, James Joyce, a convicted paedophile from Clydebank, was sentenced for possessing over 190 images of child abuse on his laptop. A known sex offender who had previously been convicted of soliciting prostitutes to help find children for abuse, Joyce has also been convicted of indecently assaulting two young children. Earlier this year, he was caught after attempting to access and store 195 child abuse images on his computer, which he kept in folders named after music albums.

The 65-year-old from Drumry has been jailed and is on the sex offenders register until at least 2025. The case followed his conviction for approaching three different sex workers in Glasgow’s east end over a year, seeking their assistance in finding children for him to abuse and requesting them to film such abuse.

Last week, Joyce appeared at Dumbarton Sheriff Court, admitting to possessing indecent images of children between March 7 and 17 of this year at his residence in Drumry. Defense lawyer Peter Young explained that Joyce intentionally obtained the images with the aim of returning to custody, as he believed he could no longer receive support after his supervision period ended last year.

Mr. Young stated, “His position is he did commit this offence to alert the authorities to be returned to custody.” He added that Joyce was aware of the potential prison sentence and that the main issue was the length of time he would serve.

Prosecutor Sarah Healing described how police seized an HP laptop and a hard drive from Joyce’s home. An initial examination revealed indecent images, which were thoroughly analyzed while Joyce was detained at Clydebank Police Office. The investigation uncovered nearly 200 images depicting children, ranging from levels one to four, with level five being classified as the most severe.

It was also revealed that Joyce had sourced these images through a peer-to-peer file sharing network, and he had stored them in folders with music album names to disguise their content. When questioned, Joyce refused to answer most inquiries and was cautioned and charged.

Sheriff Thomas McCartney described Joyce’s actions as a “calculated and deliberate” search for child images, which he stored in folders with titles designed to conceal their true nature. Given his criminal history, the sheriff sentenced him to two years and four months in prison, followed by five years on licence. Sheriff McCartney warned Joyce that failure to comply with license conditions would result in his return to prison.
