JAMES BROON FROM MOSSBLOWN SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF TEENAGE GIRL IN SHOCKING CASE

In a case that has shocked the community of Mossblown, James Broon, a man known for his devout Christian faith and family-oriented lifestyle, has been sentenced to prison after admitting to the sexual abuse of a 15-year-old girl. The disturbing incident took place at Broon’s residence in Mossblown, with the abuse occurring over a period stretching from October 1, 2007, to February 2, 2008.

Broon, a grandfather and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ, appeared before Ayr Sheriff Court to face the charges. The court was attended by two representatives of his church, who observed the proceedings as the devout Christian was sentenced. The court heard that Broon’s actions came to light after he, overwhelmed by guilt, made a full confession to a senior member of his church community.

His defense lawyer, Matt Jackson, explained that Broon’s membership in the church was a significant factor in the case coming to authorities’ attention. Jackson stated, “It is as a consequence of his membership of that church that this matter has come to the light of the authorities. He faces church proceedings which he expects may result in him being excommunicated.”

Jackson further emphasized Broon’s remorse, saying, “He is in no doubt whatsoever that what he did was wrong and that he should have done better by the child. He is sorry for what he has done – not sorry for himself, but sorry for any harm he has caused.”

Broon was described by those who know him as an “old fashioned” family man and a reformed alcoholic who has maintained sobriety for the past 30 years. Despite his otherwise stable lifestyle, a social enquiry report highlighted that Broon suffers from health issues including angina, asthma, and has experienced multiple strokes. The report classified him as a “high risk” for reoffending sexually.

The revelation of the abuse only emerged after Broon’s confession, which was prompted by his own guilt. Without his admission, authorities might not have had sufficient evidence to proceed with charges, according to his lawyer.

In sentencing, Sheriff Carole Cunningham described the case as a “very serious matter involving a gross breach of trust.” She emphasized the gravity of the offense and the need for a custodial sentence, which was set at 15 months. Broon was also ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of 10 years, reflecting the severity of his crime and the potential risk he poses to the community moving forward.
