GLAMIS MAN SENTENCED FOR BOMB THREATS AND EXPLOSIVE DEVICES
A man named James Boyd, aged 48, was involved in building homemade bombs using ingredients he purchased online, specifically from Amazon. He showed off the improvised explosive devices to two friends and expressed his intention to target his ex-wife and her new partner.
Boyd caused a bomb scare in the village of Glamis after revealing his plans to Stewart and Kimberley Craig in August or September 2023.
He initially claimed he was constructing the devices to smoke out rabbits, but a jury found him guilty of making threats to harm his former partner and her new boyfriend.
Residents of Glamis were evacuated after police uncovered a coffee jar and a bottle containing suspect white powder at Boyd’s former home.
The police later confirmed the substance was potassium nitrate and sucrose, contained in toilet tubes and sealed with electrical tape.
Boyd was arrested while walking his dog on 5 October 2023, and police searched his house, discovering materials consistent with homemade bombs.
During police interviews, Boyd admitted he possessed the bombs and had made various explosive devices.
He claimed that he had not interacted with his ex-partner for months and that he knew he made smoke bombs, which he bought from Amazon, used for rabbit holes.
Boyd had been on remand for nearly two years after his arrest.
The court convicted him of behaving in a threatening or abusive manner, including making threatening remarks and displaying materials associated with explosives between 1 August and 30 September 2023.
Judge Paul Brown sentenced him to time served, considering his remand period as sufficient punishment, and placed him under supervision for two years while banning him from contacting the Craigs for five years.
