Lurgan Animal Abuser
In a case that has shocked the local community of Lurgan, County Armagh, both James and Daniel McKenna faced justice after neglecting their pet Shih-Tzu. The incident came to light when an animal welfare officer from the local authority visited the McKenna family’s residence in Carrickvale Manor, Lurgan, and discovered the dog in a dire state of neglect.

James Martin McKenna, born on 26 November 1976, and his son Daniel James McKenna, born on 11 March 2002, who were both residing at the same address, were found to have failed in their duty to care for their animal. The officer reported that the dog was extremely underweight, with a body condition that indicated severe malnutrition. The animal also exhibited lesions on her skin, and her coat was severely matted, suggesting prolonged neglect and poor hygiene.

Following the discovery, the dog was examined by a veterinary surgeon, who confirmed that she was suffering unnecessarily due to the neglect. The veterinarian’s assessment highlighted the urgent need for care and treatment, which the dog subsequently received after being taken into council custody. The authorities ensured that she was rehomed successfully, providing her with the care and attention she desperately needed.

Despite the evidence and the clear neglect, James and Daniel McKenna failed to attend their scheduled court hearing to answer charges of animal cruelty. They were convicted in their absence, with the court ruling against them based on the evidence presented by the animal welfare officer and veterinary report. Both men accepted responsibility for the condition of the dog, acknowledging their failure to care for her properly.

As part of their sentencing, James and Daniel McKenna were ordered to pay a total of £390 in fines, costs, and charges. Additionally, they received a two-year ban from keeping any animals, a restriction that is set to expire in May 2023. The case has drawn attention to the importance of animal welfare and the consequences of neglect within the community of Lurgan, emphasizing the ongoing efforts of local authorities to combat animal cruelty.
