A young man received a custodial sentence after hacking into his former girlfriend’s Snapchat account and sharing a nude photo of her online.Jake Skinner, residing on Chestnut Crescent in Shinfield, was court-ordered at Reading Crown Court on June 30 to serve 12 months in prison.
The 22-year-old admitted to accessing his ex-partner’s account without permission and uploading a screenshot of her upper body taken via FaceTime when she was 17, onto her social media story.
He also altered her account details, preventing her from deleting the image.
Additionally, Skinner pleaded guilty to sending the photograph to her father and sister to show them what she looked like.
Earlier, at Reading Magistrates Court on March 22, he was convicted of multiple offences including sending threatening voice messages, threatening to reveal a sexual image, exposing a sexual image, and harassment without violence.
These incidents took place between November of the previous year and January 21, following the end of his relationship with the girl.
After they broke up and she started dating someone new, Skinner began sending threatening messages, such as telling them to “Kill yourself” and threats of pteroil bombing their house.
On January 5, he uploaded the screenshot to her account.
During a victim impact statement presented in court, the girl expressed feelings of depression, fear for her safety, and self-hatred due to the widespread viewing of her image.
She stated that she no longer goes outside and has become a different person.
The court was informed of Skinner’s prior convictions, totaling ten, for thirteen different offences, ranging from railway fare violations to a public offence in 2018.
His defense lawyer acknowledged the seriousness of the offense but highlighted Skinner’s immaturity and the need for ongoing support to better understand his actions.
Judge Sarah Campbell, addressing the court, recognized the distress caused to the victims and ordered Skinner to undertake a five-year restraining order.
Since January, he has been held in custody and, having served half his sentence, is expected to be released soon.
