JAIL FOR SALTAIRE PAEDOPHILE JACK SPENCER WHO ABUSED BOYS IN BRADFORD
In December 2010, a disturbing case unfolded involving Jack Spencer, a 61-year-old man from Saltaire, who was sentenced to eight years in prison for the heinous sexual abuse of two young boys. The crimes, described by the court as 'depraved' and 'disgusting,' spanned over a period of 12 years and involved multiple serious offences including attempted rape, indecent assault, and acts of indecency with a child.Spencer, who resided on Dallam Avenue in Saltaire, had initially pleaded guilty to all 16 charges against him. His plea came midway through his trial at Bradford Crown Court, after the victims had already endured the traumatic experience of giving evidence in court. The case was delayed for two days following Spencer’s arrest and subsequent detention, which was prompted by an incident where he overdosed on a painkiller on the Monday prior to sentencing.
During the sentencing hearing, Judge Jonathan Rose did not hold back in condemning Spencer’s actions. He described Spencer as a 'paedophile and a predator,' emphasizing the severity and reprehensibility of his crimes. The judge stated, “I struggle to find any areas in which mercy could be extended to you,” underscoring the gravity of the offences committed.
Judge Rose detailed the disturbing nature of Spencer’s abuse, revealing that Spencer had physically assaulted one of his victims to force compliance, using violence to satisfy his 'base lust.' The judge also highlighted how Spencer had used bribery, offering cigarettes, money, and sweets to manipulate and control the boys. One of the victims was so deeply affected that he became a drug addict, with Spencer providing him with cash to sustain his addiction, effectively trapping him in a cycle of abuse and dependency.
The second victim was described as a 'perfectly ordinary and decent boy' before Spencer’s assault, who was left psychologically scarred, introverted, and reclusive. The court heard that Spencer’s abuse transformed this boy’s life, causing lasting damage to his mental health.
Despite the gravity of the case, Spencer’s decision to contest the charges meant that his victims had to relive their traumatic experiences through cross-examination. However, Judge Rose acknowledged that Spencer had not chosen to lie further in court, which he saw as a small measure of honesty amidst the case.
As part of his sentence, Spencer was issued a Sexual Offences Prevention Order, which prohibits him from approaching his victims or having any unsupervised contact with children. Additionally, he is required to register as a sex offender with the police for the remainder of his life.
Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Ellen Allen, who led the investigation, expressed her satisfaction with the outcome. She stated, “This sentence is the culmination of a lot of hard work by officers. We are satisfied with the sentence handed down and, hopefully, this will bring some closure to the victims.”
