JACK SEVIOUR PLYMOUTH NAVAL SUBMARINER SENTENCED AFTER SEXUAL ASSAULTS AT FASLANE NAVAL BASE
Jack Seviour, a 25-year-old submariner associated with the Royal Navy and originally from Plymouth, has been handed a significant prison sentence following a series of disturbing sexual assault incidents. The court proceedings revealed that Seviour, who had previously been released on bail for another sexual assault, committed a further assault at Faslane naval base on March 23, 2023. This incident marked a grave escalation in his criminal behavior, leading to his conviction and subsequent sentencing.Seviour’s criminal record includes not only the assault at Faslane but also two other separate sexual attacks on women that occurred between January 2022 and February 2023. During the trial, it was disclosed that he had recorded one of these assaults on his mobile phone, describing his actions as ‘rapey,’ a term that underscored the severity and predatory nature of his conduct. Despite being on bail for previous allegations, Seviour continued his duties with the Royal Navy, which raised serious concerns about oversight and the safety protocols in place at the time.
The court, held at Glasgow Sheriff Court, found Seviour guilty of three counts of sexual assault. As a result, he was sentenced to an extended term of three years, with a requirement to serve two years in prison. Following his release, he will be under supervision for an additional year. The sheriff overseeing the case emphasized the profound and lasting impact these crimes have had on the victims, highlighting that the severity of the offenses warranted detention to prevent further harm.
In addition to his prison sentence, Seviour was ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years, a measure intended to monitor and restrict his activities post-release. The court heard that Seviour, who served as a weapons engineer submariner for five years, was involved in the incident at Faslane while attending an afterparty on the naval base with a colleague. Witnesses testified that a friend of one of the victims saw her crying and sobbing the following day, indicating the emotional toll inflicted by the assault.
The trial also detailed two prior incidents involving Seviour’s interactions with women he met through Tinder. In these cases, he engaged in non-consensual sexual acts, slapped one woman multiple times despite her protests, and assaulted another woman during what was initially believed to be consensual sex. Seviour denied all allegations, claiming that the victims had fabricated their stories and that his actions were misrepresented. His defense argued that the convictions had resulted in the loss of his job and personal relationships, and that alcohol consumption played a role in his behavior. However, the sheriff underscored that the custodial sentence was essential to protect the public from the potential for serious harm posed by Seviour’s actions.
