IMRAN DOUGLAS
The incident occurred on May 24 when police responded to a burglary report at her residence in Sonali Gardens.
It was revealed that Douglas had stabbed and strangled Mrs Gilby during a break-in while ransacking her room.
A nurse passing by noticed the door was shut instead of open as usual and looked inside, discovering her injured by a stab wound.
She was declared dead on the scene, with post-mortem examinations indicating she died from strangulation and a neck stab wound.
CCTV footage provided evidence linking Douglas to the scene, and he was arrested shortly afterward at an East London address.
Detective Chief Inspector Graeme Gwyn described the crime, saying, 'Margery was murdered in her own bed, in a place where she was supposed to be safe.
Seeing such brutality directed at a defenseless elderly lady was truly distressing.' The police acted quickly, using CCTV evidence and investigations to arrest Douglas, who was just 17 when the murder occurred.
He pleaded guilty and was sentenced at the Old Bailey.
