IAN SMITH FROM MARSTON MORETAINE SENTENCED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY OFFENSES IN LUTON
In a case that has shocked the local community of Marston Moretaine, Ian Smith, a 43-year-old man employed at a television porn channel earning approximately £50,000 annually, was found guilty of possessing a significant collection of illegal child abuse images. The incident came to light in July when police executed a raid at his residence on Hillson Close, leading to his arrest and subsequent investigation.During the police operation, authorities uncovered a disturbing cache of digital material. Prosecutor Claudette Elliott revealed that Smith had downloaded a total of 1,501 images and 11 video clips depicting young girls aged between seven and twelve. The material ranged from less severe to the most heinous forms of child exploitation, with some images displaying the worst types of abuse. Smith, who is married and a father of three children, admitted to viewing child pornography, acknowledging his involvement with the illicit material.
One particularly distressing image, which showed a young girl who was bound and gagged, was shown during the court proceedings. Upon seeing it, Smith expressed remorse, stating, “Oh no – that is too much.”
At the time of his arrest, Smith was residing at his home in Hillson Close but has since moved out and is now living in a bedsit on Drapers Court, also within Marston Moretaine. He appeared before Luton Crown Court to face sentencing after earlier admitting to 21 counts of making indecent photographs of a child and one count of possessing such images.
His defense lawyer, Benjamin Duncan-Jones, argued that Smith had only accessed free websites and had deleted many of the images he had downloaded, claiming he had not viewed all of the material. Despite these claims, the court found the evidence sufficient to convict him of the charges.
Judge Richard Foster addressed Smith directly, emphasizing the gravity of his crimes. He stated, “These are very serious offences. Without people like you there would be no need for the victims to be exploited.” The judge then handed down a sentence of four months in prison, suspended for 18 months, with an additional requirement of 12 months of supervision. Smith was also ordered to complete 100 hours of community service, pay fines totaling £4,400, and cover costs of £270.
Furthermore, the court imposed lifelong restrictions on Smith’s ability to work with children, banned him from using a computer at home, and mandated that he register as a sex offender for the next seven years. These measures aim to prevent any future harm and ensure public safety in the community of Marston Moretaine and beyond.
