IAN PARKHOUSE PONTARDAWE SEX OFFENDER SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEXUAL ASSAULTS IN PONTARDAWE AND SWANSEA
In January 2021, a disturbing case involving Ian Michael Parkhouse, a pensioner from Pontardawe, came to light through a series of serious allegations of sexual misconduct against a young girl. The incident, which spanned over several occasions in 2019, revealed a pattern of inappropriate and criminal behavior that has shocked the local community and prompted a stern legal response.According to court proceedings, the young girl, who was under the age of 14 at the time, endured multiple instances of sexual assault at the hands of the 73-year-old. The assaults included touching her thighs and breasts, rubbing himself against her, forcibly kissing her, and making lewd sexual comments. One particularly distressing detail was that Parkhouse would lick his lips before placing his tongue into her mouth during these forced kisses, a detail the prosecution highlighted as evidence of his predatory behavior.
Initially, the girl chose not to report the abuse out of fear of social repercussions and the shame associated with such allegations. However, she eventually confided in a teacher, which led to the police being called and an investigation being launched. The police apprehended Parkhouse, who initially denied the allegations and attempted to shift blame onto the victim. During police interviews, he was described as dismissive and uncooperative, insisting that he would never harm children.
Testimonies from the girl’s mother, read aloud in court, painted a picture of the profound emotional and psychological toll the abuse had taken on her daughter and their family. The impact was described as devastating, with lasting effects on the young girl’s well-being.
It was also revealed that Parkhouse had a prior conviction for similar offenses dating back to the 1980s. In 1987, he was sentenced to eight months in prison at Carmarthen Crown Court for sexually assaulting a girl under 14. This history underscored a troubling pattern of behavior that had persisted over decades.
When Ian Parkhouse appeared before Swansea Crown Court for a plea and sentencing hearing, he pleaded guilty to four counts of sexual assault. The court was informed that he was formerly of Llansamlet but had since moved to Rhydyfro, Pontardawe. The judge, Recorder John Philpotts, condemned his actions, emphasizing the gravity of his offenses against a vulnerable child and his attempt to blame the victim, which he described as “particularly distasteful.”
In recognition of his guilty pleas, Parkhouse received a sentence reduced by a quarter, resulting in a total of two years imprisonment. Additionally, he was subjected to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order, which restricts his access to children and aims to prevent any future offenses. Furthermore, he was designated as a registered sex offender for the next ten years, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to protect the community from potential harm.
