PLYMOUTH CARE WORKER SENTENCED TO 16 YEARS FOR RAPING ELDERLY DEMENTIA PATIENT
Care home worker Himwanth Ramkishun, aged 54, was found guilty of raping a 76-year-old woman suffering from dementia at the Freshfields nursing home in St Budeaux, Plymouth.The jury decided that Ramkishun took advantage of the vulnerable elderly resident between June 8 and June 11.
During the trial, it was revealed that he left behind a condom containing his DNA on her body, and attempted to cover up the crime by planting additional condoms around the home and involving his wife, who was a duty manager there.
The victim, who has since passed away, was helpless and unable to resist or report the assault.
The court heard that Ramkishun, a former sugar plantation foreman from Guyana, denied the charges, claiming he had accidentally picked up the condom and shook it to explain the DNA.
He also planted condoms in other staff members' pockets and pulled one from laundry to mislead investigators.
Judge Donald Tait sentenced him to 16 years in prison, describing the offense as one of the worst of its type and condemning Ramkishun's actions as "evil".
Ramkishun was taken away sobbing, watched by his wife Ivorine, who remains working at the home, while his family expressed their distress.
The investigation was challenging due to the suspect's denial, and the victim's family expressed their distress over her passing before the case was heard.
