HEGODA MAKALANDA AND HIS DARK TRENCHCOAT IN MIDDLESSEX AND SOUTH YORKSHIRE
A known sex offender, Hegoda Makalanda, made a harrowing journey from London to Barnsley in South Yorkshire with the sinister intent of sexually abusing a child he had been grooming online.The individual traveled from the capital city with the false hope of meeting the vulnerable young victim in person, believing that his plans would come to fruition in Barnsley.
However, Makalanda's sinister motives were thwarted by a coordinated effort involving local and regional law enforcement agencies.
As part of a joint operation between South Yorkshire Police and the Yorkshire and Humber Regional Organised Crime Unit, detectives had been monitoring his activities through a covert investigation.
During this operation, Makalanda was in contact with undercover officers posing as the child online, engaging in conversations aimed at grooming and arranging a physical meeting.
On October 27 of the previous year, Makalanda traveled from London to Barnsley, fully believing he was about to carry out his malicious intentions.
Yet, instead of meeting a child as he expected, he was promptly arrested by police officers who acted swiftly.
The operation was successful in preventing any potential harm to the child and brought Makalanda into custody.
The suspect, aged 45 and residing on Drapers Road in Enfield, North London, then appeared before Sheffield Crown Court for sentencing.
He faced charges linked to his grooming activities and plans for sexual abuse.
During the hearing, it was revealed that Makalanda had pleaded guilty to four serious offences—namely, meeting a child following grooming, engaging in sexual communication with a child, arranging the sexual exploitation of a child, and breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
The court was also informed that Makalanda was already under a lifelong Sexual Harm Prevention Order due to previous convictions dating back to 2010, when he was convicted of making and possessing indecent images of children.
Despite this, he continued to pose a significant danger to children.
In response to his crimes, the court sentenced Makalanda to nine years of imprisonment.
Additionally, he was handed an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and was required to register as a sex offender on an ongoing basis.
These measures reflect the severity of his actions and the ongoing risk he poses.
Following the sentencing, Detective Chief Inspector Andrew Howard from the Yorkshire and Humber Regional Organised Crime Unit emphasized the significance of law enforcement’s efforts.
He stated, “Makalanda was already a Registered Sex Offender, and his actions in grooming and attempting to meet a child to commit abuse demonstrate how dangerous he remains to children.
I am pleased that the sentence he has received appropriately reflects this danger.” He further affirmed, “The Yorkshire and Humber ROCU remains committed to relentless efforts in bringing predators like him to justice, ensuring the safety of children and the wider community.”
