REDDITCH WOMAN GETS SUSPENDED JAIL FOR DANGEROUS DRIVING AFTER RUNNING OVER BOYFRIEND
Redditch police were called at 4:30 a.m.in September last year after a witness reported a body lying in the roadway, as revealed in court proceedings at Worcester Crown Court.
Upon investigation, officers identified the deceased as Callum Lungrin, who alleged that he had been struck by his girlfriend, Hannah Barber, following an argument.
Prosecutor Amrisha Parathalingam explained that Barber had driven onto the pavement and then driven away before returning to the scene.
She was tested for alcohol consumption and found to be below the legal limit for driving, a fact confirmed by her defence attorney Charles Hamer.
Barber later stated that her boyfriend of several months had been 'faking' his injuries.
It was revealed that they had reconciled, and Lungrin had submitted a supportive letter to the court.
The 21-year-old from Bromsgrove Road, Redditch, admitted to charges of dangerous driving and was sentenced to seven months in prison, suspended for two years.
She also received an 18-month community order including a 30-day rehabilitation requirement, and was disqualified from driving for 18 months, with an extended re-test mandated.
Additionally, she was ordered to perform 120 hours of unpaid work and to pay £1,200 in costs.
Hamer remarked that Barber was from a stable background, supported by her parents, and held in high regard by her employer.
She recognized the dangers caused by her driving.
The court noted that she was emotional in February following the suicide of her best friend, for which she had been prescribed antidepressants but was no longer taking.
Her quick temper had previously led to a disorderly conduct charge at a nightclub.
Recorder William Edis QC acknowledged her mental fragility but emphasized her use of a vehicle as a weapon, having struck and injured another person and then fleeing the scene.
He noted that references indicated she came from a caring family and accepted that she had momentarily lost control.
