Gurmeet Singh Ubhi, a 54-year-old resident of Berberis Road, Leegomery, was found guilty of murdering his 24-year-old daughter, Amrit, at their family home in September of the previous year.
During the trial at Leicester Crown Court, evidence demonstrated that Ubhi, a Sikh man, struggled to accept his daughter’s Western lifestyle choices.
He was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 15 years.
It was revealed that Ubhi initially claimed he had only applied 'minimal pressure' to her neck during the incident.
The tragedy originated from a heated argument when he demanded she lower her music volume and expressed disapproval of her relationship with someone outside their faith.
Acting Detective Inspector Billy Scott commented on Ubhi’s attitude, stating, 'He ended his daughter’s life with his own hands and then calmly cleaned up the scene before contacting police.' The verdict brought relief to the investigators, while Amrit’s loved ones continue to mourn her.
They have described her as a cherished daughter, sister, and girlfriend, emphasizing her importance to those close to her.
