GREGORY MCEVOY FROM GREAT SANKEY JAILED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY OFFENSES

In November 2004, a disturbing case emerged involving Gregory William McEvoy, a resident of Great Sankey, who was convicted of possessing an extensive collection of indecent images depicting children as young as two years old. The court proceedings revealed that McEvoy, aged 35 and residing on Sheringham Road, had downloaded and stored a staggering total of 3,601 images and videos that showcased the sexual abuse of minors aged between two and twelve.

The case came to light when authorities uncovered McEvoy’s personal details, including his name, home address, email address, and credit card information, on a notorious American child pornography website. Prosecutor Mark Connor detailed that McEvoy had made three separate payments to access these illicit materials—two payments of £29.95 and one of £49.95—each granting him 90 days of access to the website’s content.

Further investigation during a police search at McEvoy’s residence in Great Sankey uncovered a collection of disturbing images. Among these were 14 indecent photographs printed out on A4 paper, which the authorities described as “haunting” due to their graphic and disturbing nature. The police also discovered that McEvoy had been actively sharing his collection of depraved images with others via file-sharing software, indicating a deliberate attempt to distribute this material within a network of like-minded individuals.

During the court hearing, McEvoy’s defense attorney, Michael Davies, acknowledged that his client’s interest in online adult content had escalated over time, ultimately leading him into this grave situation. Davies emphasized that McEvoy deeply regrets his actions and expressed that his client had endured a year of anxious anticipation while awaiting the court’s decision.

Judge Merfyn Hughes, presiding over the case, stated that a custodial sentence was inevitable given the severity of the offenses. As part of his punishment, McEvoy was sentenced to 12 months in prison and was ordered to register as a sex offender for the next ten years, reflecting the serious nature of his crimes and the potential risk posed to the community.
