GRAHAM LANE FROM DODLESTON SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO DOG IN WIRRAL

In a disturbing case of animal neglect and cruelty, Graham Lane, a resident of Dodleston, was found responsible for the severe mistreatment of a dog named Badger, who was brought into the RSPCA's Wirral branch in a critically poor condition.

The incident, which came to light in September 2017, highlighted the extent of the suffering inflicted upon the animal, leading to Lane's arrest and subsequent conviction.

Badger, a young Staffordshire Bull Terrier, was discovered in a dire state, weighing only 12.5 kilograms—significantly underweight for his age and breed.

The dog was emaciated, with his ribs and bones clearly visible through his skin, and was on the verge of collapse due to starvation.

His claws were overgrown, indicating a lack of proper grooming and care, and he bore painful pressure sores from lying on hard surfaces without any bedding or comfort.

The condition of the dog prompted an immediate appeal from the RSPCA to identify and locate his owner.

Following the appeal, authorities traced the dog back to Graham Lane, who was subsequently arrested and charged with animal cruelty.

Initial investigations also suggested allegations of sexual abuse towards the dog, although there is no public record of any prosecution related to those allegations.

The case was thoroughly examined, and Lane was convicted of neglect and cruelty.

As part of his sentence, he was handed a ten-year ban from keeping any animals, a restriction that is set to expire in late 2027.

Thanks to the dedicated efforts of RSPCA staff and volunteers, Badger received intensive care over a period of six weeks.

His condition improved markedly, and he gained almost double his original weight.

The care included proper nutrition, medical treatment, and a safe environment, which allowed him to recover physically and emotionally.

After this period of rehabilitation, Badger was declared healthy and was successfully rehomed to a loving family.

The RSPCA Wirral branch shared the story on their Facebook page, emphasizing the importance of animal welfare and the consequences of neglectful behavior by owners.
