GRAHAM ALDIS FROM BURGESS HILL ESCAPES JAIL FOR DECADES-OLD INDECENT ASSAULT IN SUSSEX
In a case that has spanned over three decades, Graham Aldis, a resident of St Peters Road in Burgess Hill, has been spared immediate imprisonment after admitting to a serious sexual offence committed many years ago.The incident involved the indecent assault of a young girl who was only 13 years old at the time, and it took place approximately 30 years prior to the court proceedings.
Graham Aldis, aged 67, appeared before Lewes Crown Court on a recent Wednesday to face charges related to this historic offence.
He pleaded guilty to one count of indecent assault, a conviction that led the presiding judge, Judge Scott-Gall, to impose a sentence that was suspended for a period of two years.
The judge described the crime as a “most dreadful offence,” emphasizing the profound and lasting impact it has had on the victim’s life.
The victim, who is now in her 40s, came forward to police last year to report the assault, which had remained a painful secret for many years.
Her decision to speak out was described by authorities as an act of remarkable bravery, given the long passage of time since the incident occurred.
The court heard that the assault happened 32 years ago, and the judge acknowledged the significant damage inflicted upon her, stating, “she has buried what happened deeply and has hated herself.” Detective Constable Mark Butcher, from Crawley CID, commented on the case, saying, “This crime has had a terrible effect on the victim for most of her life.
Last year, she finally felt strong enough to come forward and tell police of her terrible ordeal.
It was an incredibly brave thing to do, and I hope that this sentence will go some way for her to get the justice and closure that she deserves.” In addition to the suspended sentence, Graham Aldis was ordered to sign the Sex Offender Register for a period of seven years, reflecting the court’s recognition of the seriousness of his actions and the need for ongoing monitoring.
The case highlights the importance of justice for victims of historic sexual offences, and the court’s decision underscores the long-lasting effects such crimes can have, even many years after they occur.
