COUNTY DURHAM MAN GIVEN SIX-MONTH SENTENCE FOR ASSAULT AND ESCAPE
A man who changed plea on the day of his scheduled trial and admitted assaulting his partner received a total six-month prison sentence. But with time served in custody prior to the hearing, Gordon Wright was expected to be promptly released.
The 38-year-old of Hesleden, was arrested in Durham on suspicion of domestic violence on Saturday, April 5.
He fled from the back of a police vehicle in Sherburn Road, Durham, as he was being taken into custody.
He admitted a charge of escaping lawful custody at a hearing at Durham Crown Court on May 6, but he denied assault causing actual bodily harm on his partner.
A trial was scheduled to take place on that charge this week, but Wright changed his plea to guilty on the day of the hearing.
Judge Nathan Adams imposed prison sentences totalling six months for the two offences, but as the defendant has been in custody since prior to his May court hearing, the custodial period of the sentence is expected to have expired.
